Flesh and the Devil has every element that defines the Romance genre: drama, duels, exile, and a love triangle that tests a lifelong friendship! The beautiful Greta Garbo stars alongside Lars Hanson and John Gilbert, the latter of which she would begin an offscreen romance with.

In the film, two dashing young soldiers fall in love with a countess, leading to a deep romantic tension that pilots the film. Entertainment news giant Variety reviewed the film in 2007, saying it was "exceptionally acted and cleverly directed." It was added to the United States National Film Registry in 2006.

Fun Fact: This was the first of many projects in which director Clarence Brown would work with Greta Garbo. They maintained a close professional relationship, with Brown directing Garbo in seven films.
