As the perfect event for spooky season, and the kick-off of the series, the evening’s feature is The Phantom of the Opera from 1925, the first film adaptation of Gaston Leroux's 1910 horror novel. Lon Chaney’s portrayal of the titular character, a deformed virtuoso haunting the Paris Opera House, has been lauded as one of the greatest performances in horror cinema to date. The screening of The Phantom of the Opera will be accompanied by live organ music, creating an immersive experience that harks back to the silent film era.

Before the show

VIP guests will be treated to an exclusive prelude with organist Russ Peck, who will share the history of the theater’s organ and his unique approach to crafting a silent film score that echoes the era in which the films were created.

All attendees are invited to enjoy a display of 1920s automobiles next to the theatre on 4th Avenue, courtesy of the The Model T Ford Club of San Diego!

Guests of all ages are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and participate in a parade to showcase San Diego’s “Best Dressed.” Children will receive a Balboa Theatre-branded coloring book, while three lucky adults will win raffle prizes.

After the show

Following the film, Tonya Mantooth (pictured right), producer, film expert, and CEO of the San Diego International Film Festival, will lead a Post Film Discussion, exploring the film's historical significance and enduring themes.
