Balanchine Extravaganza
featuring Three 20th Century Masterworks
As the father of American ballet, George Balanchine opened the eyes and ears of audiences to the marriage of music and dance. He famously said, “see the music, hear the dance.” Balanchine Extravaganza celebrates that marriage of music and dance with three of Mr. B’s finest works.
- Serenade (1935): The first original ballet George Balanchine created in America
- Donizetti Variations (1960): Effervescent dances to music from the opera Don Sebastien
- The Four Temperaments (1946): Fusing classical steps with a lean and angular style
Pre-performance lecture by City Ballet Artistic Director Steven Wistrich starts 45 minutes prior to the start of the performance.
